The William and Jane sails to-night for Stewart's Island, in ballast. GALE AT LYTTELTON. The south-west gale which blew on Thnrsday was the severest felt in Lyttelton for years, and is said to surpass the storm of last Jane, when the mishap to the barque Bells occurred. The tag was in readiness and extra moorings were employed to keep the vessels at the outer end of the Gladstone pier. No damage was done to the shipping it the wharves and breastwork. The Margaret Galbraith, Western Monarch, Ins, and Magellan, with additional anchors, rode it oat safely. The gale was squally, and was most severe from half-past twelve to two. The sea was breaking to a height ot over forty feet at the North Head. ♦ — ; GALE AT TTMARU. One of the heaviest sonth-east sca3 experienced here for many months past was running yesterday.
