THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL BARBOUND.

Wellington, March 12,

The steamer Waitaki, with the San Francisco mail left Onehunga at half-past 10 o'clock yesterday morning, but on her arrival at the Manukau Heads the bar was. found to be impassable, and she had to anchor Huia, where she still remains, awaiting a change in the weather, Q$ learning that the Waitaki was bar bound, the Postal Department at once detained the Arawata, which left Auckland yesterday afternoon, and sent back the Waitaki to Onehunga, in order that the mails might be transhipped to the Arawata. Unfortunately the Arawata sailed before the necessary instructions reached Auckland. A heavy S.W. gale and breaking sea prevailed at the Manukau Heads yesterday and there is little improvement this morning. It is improbable that the Waitaki can leave before to-morrow morning. Supposing that the sea is going down, it is not likely that she will attempt to take the bar to-night, as it is not high water till ten o'clock. The Waitaki comes on here direct from New Plymouth, and, should she get out to-morrow morning, she may arrive on Sunday night or early on Monday. The Southern mails will go forward by the Arawata on Monday, and the Marlborough, Nelson, and West' Coast mails by the Waitaki Qn Mon.day afternoon. The ifapiey and East Coast mails were sent on hy the Arawata to Wellington, which left here yesterday for Nelson and Manakau, and returns from Nelson to-morrow, via Pioton, bringing the Waitaki's Wellington and Southern passengers. The Wellington leaves for New Plymouth and Manakau direct to-morrow afternoon.
