MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor, Qfluh T pillopa Humphrey, Efeadland,' Bobbrts, Smith, TowhSend, Garland, Otterson,- and Mainland,
The minutes of the last ordinary meet-; ing and a special meeting were read' and! confirmed, and the outward correspond-, ence was read and approved. A letter was read from Mr. G. Sumpter with reference to the claim for the; land taken in sections 71, 72, and 101, block' Papakaio, and for severance. It rgr solved, Thg.t tfye letter bp rpfgyied tha Waterworks Committee, and >th : ey confer with Mr. Connell and the Engineifeij, and bring up a report at the next ordinary meeting of all land claims, settled or unt settled."
It was also resolved, " That this Council, being exceedingly anxious to . thft Various Jap 4 plaims pqnnaption with the Waterworks finally settled, would be glad it' Mr. Connell with the least possible delay, forward a complete list iof all the land taken for the above works, whether paid or unpaid, with the amount agreed upon ip each case, or, where no
agreement has been come to, the amount demanded and the amount offered.
The County Clerk wrote asking for permission to remove about 500 cubic yards of clay from the hill on the street-line between Thames and Derwent streets.— It was decided to grant permission to remove the clay, provided that no injury was done to the road or the sections, that the work be done under the supervision of the Engineer, and that the cutting be left in a safe state. ' .i
PermiSsion was given for the transfer of the lease of section 2, block 67, to Mr, J. Harward. j ' ': The tender of Mr. J. S.. Anderson for the supply of kerosene at 2s 4d per gallon was accepted. The Inspector of Nuisances reported bringing under the notice of the Council the necessity of all registered dogs for the ensuing -year having collars upon them with the registered number stamped thereon, and that all dogs found at large without a collar, as specified, be destroyed, in accordance with the Dog Nuisance Ordinance, 1862." -The Inspector also reported that a firm in town was prepared to - supply them to the Council at 2id each. It was resolved that the Inspector should be empowered to obtain from tinsmiths in the! town tenders for the supply of badges, and to accept the lowest. ' -
The following report from the Water■pojfks Ooniinittee was read and adopted,' after some discussion "Your Waterworks to report 1 that they have carefully considered the claim of Mr. Ford for compensation for injury received on 31st July, 1879, and. have examined William Wright, arid have further consulted with: your engineer and solicitor;; but cannot find out anything that can render the Corporation lia,ble for. and would therefore recommend thait Mr.. Fjord's, splicitora be informed that the. Corporation; decline to pay any compensation. H. Wallace's claim of LlO •'for right-of-way to take timber to Big'RockFlunle, your Committee.resolve th^t..t^ shpuld see Mr. Wallace, again, and try to arrange with him for the timber to be taken through his land. If Mr. Wallace; still . persists in. making the charge, the. engineer be instructed to issue a ,voucher' far the ' LlO claimed, and a proper yeeejpt to be obtained for right-of-way,' As regards the ; susperisioti of Inspector'Kirkbyj your Committee after consideration resolved that the engineer be requested. to let Mr. Kirkby resume his duties on the 12th hist, „
The Public Works Committee reported that they had arranged with Mr. Burnett that, iu tw event Of it being found necessary to make % drain inside the , garden fence, a pipe should be used! and the drain covered in. The Committee recommended that permission to do- the work in this way should be given, and the report was adopted. ; On the motion of Councillor Smith, seconded by Councillor Humphrey, it was resolved," Thatthe Engineer be requested to have all -work under: contract -to date measured up, and 'the estimate given of the amount, required to finally carry out the waterworks'; such a'statement to'be thoroughly prepared for consideration at the next meeting of the Council." On the motion of Councillor Otterson, seconcled ! by Councilor Garland, it was resolved: —"That the engineer be .instructed to call for three separate contracts for laying the pipes connected with the waterworks, and to have them ready i for nexfeordinary meeting of the Council. [ It was further resolved that the contracts shalL beadvertised for twice in.the Lyttelton Times in Christcharch, and in the Times, Dunedin, and three times in each of the local papers." Councillor Roberts brought forward the question of appointing a Fire Inspector, but the consideration of the matter was deferred until next, meeting. The Council then rose.
