N.Z. RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.

Ripxe Camp, Nelson. March 1. \ There was a parade between 2 {and 3 p.m., when 161 members were present. At half-past two, Colonel Packe came on the ground, and shortly after the meeting was opened by Mrs. Pitt, wife of Major Pitt, firing the first shot, which was scored as a bull'sreve. The lady having been cheered, and the men divided into.twelve squads, the actual business commenced in; the first match, open to all members ofthe Association, the ranges being 200, 40Q, and 5,00 yards, seven shots at each. Prior tp this, however, the markers had expressed soifle dissatisfaction, alleg-' ing that the butts did not sufficiently protect them. Upon this some alterations were made, but when the firing began aue of the markers received a nasty out on the arm by a splinter off the target. j . Shortly after firing commenced, ja fire occurred in the camp. It appears that the occupants of the tent, composed of Wellington and Napier men, under command of Lieut. Bennett, had been smokingtheir sights at a candle, which was left burning. This ultimately communicated with the bedding, which, in addition to 1 trunks containing private effects and uniforms, was destroyed. The tent, how- 1 ever, was saved, as also some hundred rounds of ammunition. \ t First Match—2oo, 400, and 500 yards ; seven shots!at : each range ; open to all members of the Associa-i tion ; entrance fee, ss; Snider and muzzle-loadibfj.
