OAMARU FIRE BRIGADE.
The monthly meeting oj members or* the Brigade was held last WTening. The minutes of the previous meetinghaving been confirmed, a letter was readt from, the Town Clerk, intimating that thoi Municipal Council had agreed to allow & dayman to :olean the engine - ; , The Committee appointed, to report; upon the best means of providing, a wateir supply, &c, reported :—" The Committo© are of opinion that by spending' L2O they would be in a position, to erect a .suitable place for filling water carts and Supply casks for the same, the cost of carting to be defrayed by the insurance agents having risks on the place.,on fire. ' They also think that at least 500 feet more hose is necessary to put the.brigade in a position to be of service in the .qvent of a fire. The Committee having forwarded copies of their report to the, insurance agents, the following letter had been re* ceived from the Underwriters' Association: —-"I have been instructed by the companies haying risks in, to reply .to your letter of 13th inst.,; communicating the recommendations of the committee* appointed to consider the means required to procure a sufficient supply of water for use at fires.,. They are of opinion' that, as anything done can only be of a temporary character, the need for which will cease when the water for the supply of Oamartt is brought into use, it is clearly a matter which alone, concerns the Town Council, who.will be in .the enjoyment of a large income from the supply of water, and that, therefore, they cannot see their way to contribute towards the scheme proposed.
