...The .monthly meeting of the Commitflew of the Benevolent Society was 'held'las't evening at the Secretary's office. There were present—Mr. J. H. Milligan (president), , s the . Rev, A., B. Todd, MessrsFalconer, M'lntosh, Mirams, Ogilvie,, Greenfield, Mollison, and Hardy (secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting; having been read and confirmed, the following letter was. read from the collector,,: " In reply to yours dated February 18, re report on the state of the Bubsoription list for the current year, I am at U'lobb under the, present. depressed state of affairs even to venture any'suggqstion;. in any other way than by calling attdntion to our wants through the local newspapers, and urging the squatters,and farmers \q bestir themselves oh behalf of, the sooiety and send their lists in as soon possible. In fact the lists ought to be in now front. the stations. With regardto collection inj the town, I do not think anything bettercan be done at present,, At a later date ai a general'committee canvass would, E think, meet with success. I have to calll your attention.to the fact that the greater?" amount of relief finds its way to Irish; recipients, and the society receives very little assistance from the' well-td-dpt pqftion of that community. I should think about L2OO more ought to be received! from subscriptions during ; the cusrerilt year. Awaiting the Committee's furthercommands, —I remain, yours, &c, "Henry Richmond."
. After a little discussion, it was resolved?,, on the motion of Mr. Headland, that the Secretary should write to the country collectors asking them, to forward their lists as early as possible, and to their influence as the Society was greatly in need of funds.-
The Visiting Committer's report, deal* ing with a~ number of cakes of relief, m& read, and the several suggestions adopted.. A' letter was read fromthe Colonial Under-Secretary stating that Lll2, being pound-for pound subsidy on the subsorip>tions raised had been passed for payment^. The Barrack-master reported that there were six children remaining in the insti- ' Five domestic servants had' been admitted into the servants' hwaate; all of whom, with the exception off ooao,. obtained immediate employmefflili., I, There, had been a large demand few servants,, and several country situations' were stillt on the boots. He had' inspected the> Society's cottages and found them ia a* fair state of repair, with the exceptjoni off two which had been left in; a most'dhriy state and six panes of glass broken iri each. .cottage. The gift of. a case of apples from Mr. John M'Lean,Redcastle, was acknowledged. The master concluded, " Gifts of clothing for the use of the children:in. the institution would be-most acceptably.received." ' . It having been reported that one of thoi children in the home had been taken, away without authority, it was decided togive the barrackmaster instructions not to. permit any child to be taken away without the written order of two. members of; the Committee or the President.
