They will recommend' the immediate survey of the Waikaia line; of railway. February 4. A fatal accident occurred at Outram on Saturday night, by which a bullock driver, 1 who wa3 known only by the name of " Sam," was killed. He and another were driving their teams together along the road, when deceased's team was noticed to be without its driver, who, upon being looked for by the other man, was found lying on the road some distance behind dead. In attemping to put the wheel right the dray had passed over his neck. ; Mr. Cutton, M.H.R. for Taieri, adf dressed his constituents at Mosgiel last night. He was accerded a good hearing, and at the conclusion of his address received unanimous vote of confidence. GRAHAMSTOWN. February 4. The case of the child Fitzsymonds has been settled by the Catholics agreeing to pay for the maintenance of the infant in the Orphanage rather than allow its adoption by a Protestant. There is great discontent about the railway. The Government have ordered a number of sleepers intended for the Thames end of the line to be sent to Wangarei. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest on the child run over by a dray on Monday. A man named Hunter married a girl recently against the wishes of her parents, and will be charged with making a false declaration before the Registrar at the R.M. Court on Friday.
HAWERA. February 3. ! It is expected that it will take a week to complete the formation of a road between Mahi and Waingongoro, and the constabulary will then start at Kaupokonui, and form a road towards Kaupuni. The Native Minister is expected here to-morrow. No natives are allowed inside the camp at Kaipipi, but are permitted to bring commodities for sale, and a sentry is placed to keep them from intruding inside the line. Such precaution is necessary, but nothing is done to wantonly hurt the feelings of the natives, who consider themselves owners of the soil.
NEW PLYMOUTH. February 3. Owing to bush fires in the neighborhood of Major Atkinson's estate, he has suffered considerable damage, over a mile of fencing having been burned, besides hedges, &c. It was feared at one time that a large stack would have caught, but it was most fortunately saved. Mr. Adison, of Egmont Tillage, had the greater'part 6f his grass, burned off on Sunday by bush fires. s At the Police Court, a., question arose respecting the powers of certain District Courts to,grant-probate, of .administration. His Worship said that by an Act passed last session .the District Courts of Otagp, Hokitika, Napier, Auckland, Taranaki, Nelson, and Marlborough were not only prohibited- from issuing probate, but all probate orders already granted ~by these Courts were invalid. / This was evidently an egregious error, and he believed would be rectified next session. ' •' ' : At, the Borough Council, J. M'Donald requested compensation for loss of his wife, who was - drowned through falling into a river, the approaches to which were riot properly protected: The woman was not sober at the time, and the bridge was a private one, leading from an hotel. February 4. .Two somewhat' serious accidents happened at .the harbpr works yesterday afternoon. A man oh one of the tramway trucks* was thrown < violently to the ground through- the- trucks being started before the .signal . was given. At lialf-
past four o'clock two men were working underneath, a rock that had been fractured by a dynamite charge, when a large piece fell down, :and but for it being elevated at one end by catching a projecting rock, would have crushed the men. It, however, rolled over a man, hitting him on the back. The injury, although not fatal, is very severe. BLENHEIM. February 3. - The tail of what appeared to be a very large comet was visible here to-night WANGANUI. February 4. An amateur pedestrian named Neary, a boatmaker, attempted to walk 50 miles in (? 12) hours. A course of 80 yards was, marked out in the drillshed. He walked in splendid style, and covered 49 miles and 160 yards. NELSON. February 4.;. Arthur L. Sweet, late of Wellington, formerly of Auckland, charged with forging a cheque for L 5 17s, has been remanded, till Friday. An elderly man named W. Brown, residing at Wakapuaka, whilst walking out, received a sunstroke and fell, breaking his thigh. : '• j
