A number of Russian students have issued a proclamation to the effect that they will struggle even to the death against the Government. New York, February 2. The American Press generally condemns the views of Parnell, as expressed in his recent speeches. Washington, February 2. There will be a special sitting of Congress shortly to enable Parnell •to deliver a speech to the members on the subject of the Irish land question. (special to press association.) London, February 3. Lord Derby, speaking at Manchester, expressed the strongest conviction that should the House of Lords be reformed upon the Colonial model, those replacing the Peers would take factious and desperate means to give force to an energetic feeling to repress their inferiors in the other House, soon producing a deadlock. The meat received by the Strathleven cuts well, and the sailors say that it eats splendidly. It was kept many degrees below the freezing point during the whole of the voyage, the third of the power of the machinery only being exerted. The Italian exhibits for the Melbourne Exhibition number 1000, and are being shipped on board a warship at Yevice. The Russian press threaten Persia, suspecting the object of the treaty with England. (SPECIAL TO THE MELBOURNE AGE.) London, February 3. The Russian Press is irritated at the treaty between England and Persia, and threaten vengeance on Persia. Over 1000 interesting Italian exhibits are being loaded at Yenice for the Melbourne Exhibition. DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

The banks have reduced the rate of interest on deposits for three months to 3 per cent.; six months, 4 per cent.; and twelve months, 5 per cent. The dissolution of Parliament takes place positively to-day. Sydney, February 4. Mr. Sutherland, for 20 years in Parliament, and formerly Minister for Public Works, has resigned his seat in the Assembly. A comet was visible last night throughout the southern colonies of Australia. Brisbane, February 4, The Queensland Government has resolved to call for tenders for direct steam service for mail and immigrants via the Torres Straits. . (special to press association.) Melbourne, February 3. Queensland sugars have advanced 103 to 30s, according to .quality. One thousand bags of New Zealand oats have beed sold at 2s 7£d: A shipment of Patna rice has been sold in bond at JL-12 15s per ton. I Sydney, February 3. The blacks describe the person supposed to be Classan, the explorer, as feeble and decrepit. On hearing of the vicinity of squatters,' he /begged to be taken thither, but the blacks refused. He stole ou£ of the camp at night, and was missed in the morning. They tracked him, and found him dead.
