The next series of wool auctions are fixed for 17th February. Thp arrivals to date amount to 50,000 bales. The quantity of new arrivals to be included in the sales has been restricted by the Importers Committee to 350,000 bales. The Daily News to-day publishes a tele-1 gram from Afghanistan stating that Mahomed Jan has gathered a large force, and is now threatening the British positions in and around Cabuf. (SPECIAL TO THE MELBOURNE London, January 21. Mr. Russell Lowell has been appointed American Minister to England, The Govenuneut refused a special yate to the Orient Company. A resolution to vote to the Irish Distress Fund half a million dollars by Congress was referred to the Committee. The Standard's report of the capture of fcliiliskar is confirmed. A Times' Berlin telegram states that the Minister of State has informed the Saxon Chamber that the Federal Council are discussing a project to found convict colonies in the Pacific, but the ijiatter is still undecided. The telegram adds that Prince Bismarck's support of the Walytieau Company is intended to further this object. January 22. The latest news from Afghanistan states that a force of 20,000, chiefly Ghilzais,
are advancing on Cabul. General Roberts telegraphß that it is necessary to maintain a strong British force. A German convict settlement on the most southerly portion of the Navigators is contemplated. An explosion of fire damp occurred at Hartly mine, Newcastle. The number of killed is 150. Polynesian shares are being largely taken up in Germany, except at Hamburg. (special to press association.) London,. January 22. At the wool sales at least 250,000 bales wiil be offered.
