SPECIAL CABLEGRAM.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 London, January 17. TheFrenchGovernment have announced their programme. It is colorless, and contains little of note. The Turcomans have routed the Russians, who were compelled to retreat to the ships and abandon their stores. The London Press still continues to devote a good deal of attention to Victorian politics. The Pall Mall Gazette rejoices over the fact that Mr. Graham Berry is tottering from his once secure position. It says he began well, but lists drifted from his policy and disgusted his supporters. The Times, in an article upon political matters in Victoria, opposes the resort to the plebiscite, and denies that an appeal to England is excusable, as both Houses are at variance with the principle. It supports the suggestion of Mr. Service, and gives extracts from the Age opposing Mr. Berry. A letter received in Melbourne states that New Zealand wheat is selling at 58s. per 4961b5., with the market drooping. It also says money is abundant. Australian wheat is selling at 52s and New Zealand at 51s per 4961b5. The corn market is dropping. Flour is selling at from 44s to 45s per 2801bs. Hides are active at from 6Jd to 6£d. Tallow is steady. Victorian four per cent, debentures have advanced 10s, and Tasmanian five per cents, have advanced 20s.
