The Kakanui Road Board held their usual monthly meeting yesterday, when there were Tpresent-—Messrs Gilchrist (Chairman), Elder; M'Auly, Manning, Walker, Hedley, Martin, Thomson, and Oliver (Engineer). A meeting of :the Committee of the North Otago Horticultural Society was held last evening in Mr. Hardy's there being present—Dr. De Lautour (Chairman), Messrs Glen, Montagu, Maloney, Heywood, Forsyth, and Spratt (Hon. Secretary). The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, -the accounts as rendered were passed for payment. It was resolved, " That the prize schedule as made out be pgwwd, and that the Treasurer be empowered to advertise the payment of all prize moneys." Bro. lies introduced Bro. W. B. Beney, a visiting brother from Canada, who was courteously received. : Bro. Beney, by request, gave a very full and most interesting account of the working of I the Order in America, after which he pre- . sen ted to the Lodge a handsome 1.0.0. F. emblematical chart and Lord's Prayer, illuminated. The design is skilfully executed and tastefully framed, and will be fonnd a great acquisition to the Lodge. Their lease inclndes all the space between their hotel in High-street and the premises occupied by Messrs. M'Farlane, grocers, in Princes-street. The intention of the firm is to let their present building for commercial purposes, and to erect at the corner of High and Princes-streets a stni(> tnre that will be worthy of the site, which is without doubt the. best in the city. The new hotel will be similar in character to the existing one, with many improvements which have suggested themselves to the Messrs. Watson Vince the Commercial Hotel was opened.
