The J\liiori prisoners arrested for trespassing on settlors' land at T;ir;uiaki are down ill the calendar for trial at tin; criminal sittings or the Supreme Court, commencing on Monday. It is understood tliat tlie counsel for the prisoners will ask for a special sitting 01 the Court to ]ic;ir the charges, and it is believed that the Crown Prosecutor will consent to the postponement, providing the Court sits before the end of the year. I !ctober G. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court commenced this morning, before Mr. Chief Justice Prendergasi. In bis charge he referred to the large increase of petty theft, \\ ith to the Maori prisoners arrested mi the West Coast tor trespass and maliciousness, he thonglir their cases would not be hoard, but be postponed by proclamation. Mr. '['ravers, who i 3 retained to defend the natives, applied for a postponement, and said they would be tried at a special sitting. The Crown Prosecutor consented to the adjournment, which his Honor granted. A true bill was found against Frank Anioor for larceny from Turubuii, and Co.'s. The prisoner pleaded guihv, and was remanded for sentence. George Drighting, for burglary at the Upper Hutt, was acquitted. True bills have been found in the eases of Goorgo Snooks, for larceny,' and Cornelius Fisher, for horse-stealing and stealing a cow. CHIIISTCHURCH. October 4. Mr. Maddison, architect, consents to his selected design for the New Town Hall and Municipal Buildings being referred to the ratepayers. In the eyc::t f,f non-acceptance by thern he will have no claim upon the Council. ! A German named Eckhoff, living in a lane off Lichfield-street east, dragged his wife out of the house by the hair to-day, and struck lier twice on the back of the head with a bottle. The woman was picked up with her head bleeding profusely and conveyed to the hospital, where it was found that the wound was about an inch in length and a quarter of an inch in depth, severing a small superficial artery. So far the woman seems likely to do well, but this cannot be positively known for a day or two. Eckhoff cleared out after the assault, and had not been arrested up to this evening. The police authorities here believe that the gems recently offered for sale in Auckland are a portion of those stolen gome time ago from the Chfistchuroh Museum, as they bear the description of those missing from the lot found on the man who was arrested at Lyttelton.
October 5. Yesterday was an extremely cold day, a south-west gale (accompanied by heavy showers of hail) blowing until daylight this morning. Some of the hailstones were of very large 'size. During the night it was bitterly cold, but to-day the storm has ceased, and the sun is shining. No damage is yet reported. A L C K L A N L). October 4. The diver engaged to plug the Thames big pump did not succeed in doing so. The stoppage and the influx of water will have a damaging effect on mining operations. Mr. Jackson, son of Mr. D. Jackson, of Onehunga, and Mr. Sherrard, narrowly escaped drowning off Tararua Point. A sea struck the boat, washing Sherrard overboard, and Jackson jumped out after him. Both succeeded in swimming ashore, though the night was dark and stormy. October 6. Arrived Hero, from Sydney, with news to 30th September. The success of the Exhibition has been greatly enhanced in consequence of the daily opening of fresh exhibits. The attendance, save first shilling day, has been a heavy pecuniary failing, ami it will inevitably pay but, little more than current expenses. A deputation to the Colonial Treasurer have protested against tlu: sale of goods at the Exhibition. Mr. M'Donald, KM., gave judgment in the action Jos. Newman and Thomas Machattie, for briber}' and corruption in connection with the City West election, for prosecutor, and awarded full costs. The prosecutor intends to take further proceedings to follow up the petition sent by him to the Assembly. LYTTELTON. October 4. A iierce south-west gale has been blowing in port all the morning, accompanied by hard squalls of rain and hail and rain. A heavy sea was running in the harbor, and during one squall a sheet of water was driven over the western breakwater from one end to the other. The barometer is rising, and at noon was standing at 28-00. GRAHAMSTOWN. October 4. A three-roomed cottage in the township was burned down this morning. Two young girls, who were the only inmates, nearly lost their lives, being only awakened by some person passing. The contractor accused of shifting surveyors' pegs for cutting was proceeded against in the Court to-day. After hearing most of the evidence, the Resident Magistrate was of opinion that defendant had moved the pegs, but withheld his decision till Monday on legal points. News of the defeat of the Government caused a great sensation here, and it is now thought certain that Mr. Whitaker will stand for the Thames seat.
