At the Supreme Court to-day, Judge Williams, in his charge to th-j <!ra::d Jury, merely explained the law of t:ie cases on the calendar. lie congratulated the jury on the marked absence of any of the staple cases such as forgery, theft, and the like, notwithstanding that the past winter had been one of severe depression, <>ne during which the working classes might have been expected to be overcome bv temptation. The offences on the calendar were committed by rnon wlic were considerably beyond the reach of absolute want. On a previous occasion at Christchurch he had taken occasion to i observe that in good times, when wages were high and work plentiful, and amidst gaeat national prosperity, crime became very prevalent, because though tho industrial classes were law abiding, they were in such times unable to resist temptation of excessive drinking, whence crime became rampant, Over 2000 people went to the port to inspect the liotomahana yesterday. One train left with 27 carriages, drawn by two engines. Hawkins pleaded guilty to embezzlement. Sentence is deferred till tomorrow. Richardson, for robbery, v.-as sentenced to six months iinprisonmen;. Stout and Dick are defending Murray for the serious offence for which he was committed to take his trial.
