At the inquest on Ann Smith yesterday, the jury returned an open verdict to the eiFoct that the deceased, Ann Smith, met her death by convulsions, induced by fracture of the right leg, but there is not •■tlicieut evidence to show how the said fracture was caused. The following rider was added to the verdict :—" The jury, whilst not considering that the fracture of the deceased's leg was caused directly or indirectly by the act of James Smith, her husband, yet consider that he conducted himself towards her with great inhumanity. when he must have known that she was in great pain." Tiie inquest on the Octagon fire is not vet concluded.
CHRISTCHURCH. October 2. The Harbor Board have accepted the tender of Messrs. Ware and Jones (of Auckland) for the graving dock, at a cost of L 70.34-4 13s id. A baptismal service was held last night, in the Baptist Church. Five males and six females have been baptised since the lath January. At a meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday, a copy of a letter from the Colonial Secretary was read, which had been received hero by the late medical start". After a long discussion, the following resolution was agreed to : —" That the Chairman be requested to prepare a formal renly to the letter of certain medical practitioners of Christchurch, also to the Colonial Secretary, and submit the same for the approval of the Board." Some samt'les of genuine Now Zealand wine have been exhibited here, which are oti'ered for sale at a reasonable price, and have been pronounced fair samples. They partake very much of the character of Australian wine. A monster entertainment is to be given at the Oddfellows' Hall, on Saturday afternoon, in aid of the benevolent fund of a Ciiristeiiurch .Society. The novelty in it is that all the theatrical companies in town, of whom there arc a large number, will appear. GRAHAMSTOWN. October 2. Messrs.
