(I'Ei: association). AUCKLAND. October 2. A meeting of personß interested in relieving the depressed state of the labor market has been held, and a Working Men's Society formed to promote the interests of the laboring classes. Stark,
the defeated candidate for City West, has been elected President. There is an unemployed agitation at Hamilton. The contractors there are offering 8s per day. but cannot get men. In the Resident Magistrate's Court a case, Joseph Newman v. T. Machattie, for alleged breach by corrupt practices of the Prevention Act at the City West election, is proceeding. Hesketh and Tyler are conducting the prosecution. DUNEDIN. October 1. i The assessments on stock on runs in the Provincial District of Otago for 1879SO, exclusive of rhe Invercargill Land j District, and rents received under the Land Act. 1H77, amount to L4O,CS'.t 13s 2d. The Customs revenue collected at the Port of Dunedin for the quarter ending September 30, was L 12.111 Gs 7d, and for the corresponding quarter of previous year, L 10,055 Os lOd. CHRISTCHUPvCH. October 1. There are now 455 men employed on the Weka Pass section of the Amberley and Brunnerton railway. It is not intended for the present to place any additional labor upon that work. The Government, however, have decided, should any considerable number of men still remain out of employment, to open another section of the Opawa branch railway near Albury. GRAHAMSTOWN. October 2. A special message to the Star says that the Ngatihakos arc beginning to feel that the inaction of the Government bodes .something serious for the tribe, probably in the direction of the confiscation of their land. They have endeavored to entice the members of the police force to the settlement on various pretexts, but the constables were not to be had. It is stated that they wish to get the Europeans as hostages, and then surrender the aggressors. At the Harbor Board meeting last night «reat dissatisfaction was expressed with Sir John Cuode's report. Information has been received that Sir George Grey cannot legally resign the Thames seat until 30 days after the opening of Parliament.
