THE LATE FIRE IN DUNEDIN.
Dunedkt, September 17. The inquiry into the Octagon fire was continued until past two o'clock this morning, and then adjourned until two this afternoon. On resuming, Mr. Dcnniston intimated that he would not call any witnesses, and the C.Toner after consulting the jurj- decided to adjourn till seven o'clock this evening, in order that he might prepare hi s summing up. In the evening, sifter the Coroner's summing up, the jury, after several hours' deliberation, returned the following verdict :—That the fire was the wilful act of William Waters. The jury added a rider, consisting of ten clauses, which had reference specially to improving the Fire Brigade organisation. The verdict at the inquest on the bodies was to the effect that the deceased persons died through the wilful setting fire to thfi buildings by Waters ; but the jury stated that they did not believe that Waters liad any desire to cause loss of life, probably thinking that the people would be driven out by the smoke. Waters was then committed for trial.
