WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following is the conclusion of our report of yesterday's meeting of the Council:— The following tenders were accepter 1 :: —Contract 75, fen/ving at Maheno, Mv. ,T. Wright, L 52 j >ls ; contract 74, gravelling at Pap&kaio, Mr. James Smith, L 45 ; contract To', reconstruction of Kakaliui bridge, Mr. A. C. Weir, L 74.9 los. The Clerk to the Kakanui Road Board wrote, asking the Council to take over the Beach road between Oamaru and Kakanui Mouth, and proclaim it a county road. . Mr. Thomson moved that the road be proclaimed a county road. He said that a great deal of money had been expended upon the road for many years past, but the cutting up of the Totara Estate had entailed a number of fresh works upon the Board, and they were anxioijs to have the road taken over by the Council.. Mr. Todd seconded the motion. After some discussion the-motion was carried, an amendment moved by Mr. Sutherland and seconded by Mr. Johnston, to the effect that no action should be taken at present, being negatived. A letter from Mr. Martin Landrebe, Pukeuri Point, drawing attention to the fact that Mr. Paton's culvert had fallen in, causing the storm water to flood his (the writer's) property, was referred to • the Engineer.
The following report from the Inspector was read : I have the honor to forward report on the various roads and works for the month of August: The roads in the Hampden riding are in good order. I would bog to recommend that a culvert near the Mocraki Hotel be lengthened ; at present it is not safe. The cost would not exceed LlO. The earthwork portion of the contract on road to Herbert railway station is almost complete. The contracts on the new road at Island Stream are in fair progress. The bridges are nearly finished, as also the earthwork ill the road formation. The gravelling has been delayed to give the earthwork time to consolidate. In the bridge over the Island Stream (lie butments are almost finished, and the centre pier is about to be commenced. In the Waiareka riding the road work authorised at Teaneraki lias been done, with the exception of a portion of the metalling, which has been delayed to give the embankment tinn?-* to subside. The" contract for road on the Tables is not yet completed. The number of daymen employed on the roads . in the different ridings is : —Otepopo, 2 ; Kakanui, 2; Waiareka, 5; Papakaio, 3; Awamoko, 2 ; Otekaikc, 2. Several extra men, employed during the wet weather, have been discharged. The Engineers reported as follows : In accordance with instructions dated the Kith June, we have made a survey of the road at Wharekuri Creek. The probable cost of lengthening culvert and improving grades in accordance with drawing will be about LISS. Likewise by letter dated the I Sth August: Ist. Re petition of residents at Duntroon, we would recommend two small cuttings at the south end of Middleton-street and north end of Kees-street. We have taken the levels, and prepared drawings of the cuttings, the total quantity of cutting is 300 cubic yards. Winton of Duntroon offers to execute the work at one shilling per cubic yard, which is a reasonable price for a small work. If approved, we make the necessary arrangements to have the work executed. 2nd. lie footbridge over the Awamoko stream, we have made the necessary measurements, and prepared a sketch for bridge, the probable cost will.be about LSS. 3rd. We have forwarded specifications for erection of fence on each side of the new road, from Maheno to Island stream. 4th. Culvert at Hampden, and pitching at Trotters' Creek : specifications will be forwarded in time for tenders being asked for the October meeting of the Council. In connection with a portion of the report, a letter was read from the Municipal Engineer, expressing regret for having forgotten to bring under the notice of the Municipal Council the matter of a footbridge at Black Point. At the same timo he expressed the opinion that the Council would agree to do the work provided the County Council would ei'ect the bridge at Awamoko. It was decided to call for tenders for extending the culverts, &c., at Wharekuri. Further consideration of th.e works at Trotter's Creek was postponed, and the remainder of the report was agreed to. The Engineer was instructed to prepare plans and specifications for a pound at Papakaio. { Accounts to the amount of LDC3 17s 7<l were" passed for payment, and the Council rose. \
