(J.-EK TKESS ASSOCIATION). WELLINGTON. September 9. A singular accident occurred this morning. A horse and cart, the property of C. M'Kirdy, was taken into the sea near Evans' Bay to be washed, but getting into deep water, the horse and cart were carried away by the tide and lost. The driver swam ashore. Mr. M'Kirdy estimated his loss at LIOO. The City Council has voted L 25 for the purpose of prospecting in the Wairarapa district, and the Government give a similar amount. DUNE DIN. September 9. A meeting of the Fire Underwriters' Association was held in the Association's office this afternoon (Mr. Jack in the chair). A resolution was adopted to the effect that the present means for extinguishing fires possessed by the city are not as perfect as they might be, and requesting the Council to take the matter into their immediate consideration. AUCKLAND. September 9. Three draught fillies arrived by the Hero from Sydney, also tlie brood mares Sylvia and Onyx, all purchased to the order of the Auckland Stud Co. September 10. A German named James Hads was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for robbing a Chinaman named Hadge of money and jewellery. Mr. Hislop, Chief Inspector of Schools, is now in Auckland. He will go to the North to inspect the native schools lately placed under his department. Great interest is manifested in the City East election.
