New Zealand 5 per cent. 10-40 loan, 101, ex dividend. September 3. The Czar of Russia and the Emperor of Germany met at Konigsberg, on the Russian frontier. The meeting was most cordial. The Emperor afterwards exchanged visits. (special to melboukne age.) London, September 4. War is deemed imminent between England and Burmah. Colonel Browne, the British Resident at Mandalay, and a number of Europeans, apprehensive of outrages, have withdrawn from the city. Failing the immediate submission of the King,°Lord Lytton directs the advance of several regiments, which are under immediate orders to march on Mandalay. An expedition upon Arawady is probable. The latest news from the Cape reports that the remainder of Cetewayo's principal chiefs have surrendered, with a thousand cattle. Sir Garnet Wolseley anticipates an early capture of Cetewayo. September 5 The Church of England Synod for the diocese of Newcastle have elected as bishop the Rev. Dr. Pierson, Yicar of Newark. Albany, September 5. The P. and 0. steamer Tanjore, with the Suez Mail, has arrived. She brings Cape news to August 18. At Makazis, Cetewayo's kraal las been totally destroyed. Cetewayo, with but few followers, fled into the bush southwards, and was closely pursued by the British troops. Three of Cetewayo's sons, with several Zulus, and nine Zulu chiefs surrendered, with all Cetewayo's cattle. (special to press association.) Melbourne, September 4. The Assembly was counted out after 10 o'clock this morning. No business was done, the Opposition refusing to allow the tariff to be rushed through without a public debate. A woman named Evans has passed for a man for twenty years. She has been married to three different women. Sir John Coode strongly recommends the Harbor Trust to adhere to his plans regarding the Melbourne dock. He advises that the dock be excavated, notwithstanding its great cost. Sydney, September 4.
A Sunday school teacher has been arrested for a savage assault on a pupil, whose condition is precarious. It is thought he is dying. His depositions have been taken.
