(TEH PRESS ASSOCIATION). WELLINGTON. September 1. At the Police Court to-day, Nicholas Johnston was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for stabbing Lars Olson, a seaman. A large number of the unemployed were given work on the West Coast railway works this morning, at wages ranging from 7s to 5s a day. September 2. The fire brigades intend to present a petition to Parliament next session regarding tlieir having free passage over railways, similar to volunteers. TIMARU. September 2. The criminal sessions at the Timaru District Court commenced o-day. Stevens, against whom there were two charges of larceny and one assault, was ordered to be detained during the pleasure of the Crown, the prisoner having been proved to be insane. The heuringof charges of frn'idulent insolvency are now on. AL CKLAND. September 2. Samuel Mums' stables, at llemuera, were burnt down early this morning. The loss is estimated at LIOOO. The premises were insured in the South British for L3OO. John Skinner was charged with a breach of the Arms Act by unlawfully moving from Gisborne to Auckland, on board the Minnehaha, three guns, not required for the defence of the vessel. A lad of fourteen, named William Laird, charged with stealing registered letters, was sent to the Navai Training School for fifteen months. The whole of the seamen of the ship Minister of Marine have been ordered back to the vessel. The captain promised to remit the lines and give them plenty of food. GRAHAMSTOWN. February 1. At four o'clock this morning a large piece of ground near the Piako Gold Mining Company's engine-house collapsed, owing to the insecure timbering in the upper levels of the mine. It carried away the winding engine, tons of brick work, the gear and tramway, which have entirely disappeared. The damage is estimated at several thousand pounds. Many of the underground works were completely destroyed. It is'feared that a further subsidence will ensue. The Bank of New Zealand holds a mortgage on the property.
