John Skinner was charged with a breach of the Arms Act by unlawfully moving from Gisborne to Auckland, on board the Minnehaha, three guns, not required for the defence of the vessel. A lad of fourteen, named William Laird, charged with stealing registered letters, was sent to the Navai Training School for fifteen months. The whole of the seamen of the ship Minister of Marine have been ordered back to the vessel. The captain promised to remit the lines and give them plenty of food. GRAHAMSTOWN. February 1. At four o'clock this morning a large piece of ground near the Piako Gold Mining Company's engine-house collapsed, owing to the insecure timbering in the upper levels of the mine. It carried away the winding engine, tons of brick work, the gear and tramway, which have entirely disappeared. The damage is estimated at several thousand pounds. Many of the underground works were completely destroyed. It is'feared that a further subsidence will ensue. The Bank of New Zealand holds a mortgage on the property.
