ELECTION GOSSIP.
Wanganui, August 30. At the Rangitikei nomination, Major Willis and Mr. M'Lean were proposed. On a show of hands being taken, forty were held up for Willis, and thirty for M'Lean. Tauranga, August 30. The nomination of candidates was held yesterday. Messrs. G. B. Morris (Opposition), Allan M'Donald (Greyite), and J. W. Johnston (independent) were proposed. A show of hands was in favor of Mr. Morris, for whom three cheers were given. All parties are confident of election on Friday next. Tijiaru, August 29. There are now two Liberal candidates in the field for Gladstone, namely, Mr. W. Moody and Dr. Deane. Strong Committees have been formed both for Mr. Turnbull and Mr. Woollcombe. Both sides are working very hard. Christchurch, August 29. Messrs. Murray-Aynsley and Allwright were nominated to-day for Lyttelton. New Plymouth, August 29. Major Atkinson was well received here, and gave a long address, concluding by saying that he believed the country would return members to the House who would turn out Sir G. Grey and the incompetent Ministry that had been in office for the past two years, and replace them with an earnest and competent one, capable of dealing both with fiuance and native affairs. A vote of confidence in hiin was carried unanimously. Invercahgill, August 29. Mr. Shanks has been returned for Mataura unopposed. The meeting of Sir G. Grey's to-night was crowded. The Mayor occupied the chair. Sir G. Grey met with no interruption. Mr. Harvey, solicitor, moved a vote of no confidence, but his remarks encountered much interruption. The Grey party interceded for a hearing for him, but he had to retire. The opposition was only partial, and a very large minority voted for Mr. Harvey's amendment. Mr. Bain's party are very confident of success, and it is not considered that the election on Monday will be much influenced by these proceedings. Wellington, August 29. The Hon. W. Gisborne was returned unopposed for the Totara district. Napier, August 29, Messrs. Sutton, Russell, Buchanan, and Maney were nominated. The last two are Government candidates. The show 'of hands was three to one in favor of Messrs. Buchanan and Maney. There will be no opposition to Mr. Ormond at Clive.
Nelson, August 29. Mr. R. J. Richmond and Mr. Wartney
have both addressed large meetings of electors for the suburbs at Richmond. Mr. John Graham addressed a crowded meeting at Nelson last night, and was very favorably received. He spoke in favor of Sir George Grey's proposals, but against Mr. Macandrew. He said he was probably the first working mechanic who had put up in New Zealand, and said he considered the class to which he belonged should be represented from amongst themselves. He received a vote of thanks. Westfort, August 29. Messrs. Fisher and Henry were nominated at a crowded and rather noisy meeting. The show of hands was in favor of Mr. Fisher. Vigorous cheers were given for Sir G. Grey at the close of the meeting.
