At the Police Court, this morning, Webden, a storekeeper, was fined L2O and costs for sly A similar charge against Mrs, M'AlJister, of the Cosmopolitan Club, was dismissed, because of insufficient evidence. J. Smith, proprietor of the Adelaide-road Theatre, was lined 10s and costs for allowing a performance to take place in the hall before it was inspected and licensed by the City Council. The Halcione, ship, from London, is now being towed in. She has a large number of passengers. The Ned White, brigantiije, from New York, and Edwin Bassett, barque, from Newcastle, are signalled. A proclamation in a Gazette issued today calls Parliament together for the despatch of business on the 17th September. AUCKLAND. August 20. A telegram received from the Government says that an amount of L 20,000 has been allotted to Auckland for educational purposes ; L7OOO more than that obtained last' year. It is reported that Mr. William liace is going to the Bay of Islands as Magistrate. The 17th anniversary of the Hope of Auckland, 1.0. R., has been held.. The report showed the increase of members to be 25 per cent., with a balance of LSOO.
CHRISTCHURCH. August 19. The Committee appointed by the City Council to select designs for a Town Hall have directed the surveyors, who reported that the first six selections were all outside the limit, to report upon the remaining designs, and ascertain if any them can be carried out for the L 20,0 JO proposed to be spent. In consequence of complaints from the Sydenham Council, the rate of postage between Sydenham and Christchurch has been reduced to a penny. DTJNEDIN. August 19. Seventeen members representing the football clubs inDunedin leave for Christchurch on Friday morning, in charge of Mr. H. Rose, to play matches against Canterbury on Saturday and Wellington on Tuesday. Each game will be played by fifteen men aside. Mr. Neville, who represented Otago in the team which made so successful a tour through the Colony two years ago, and who is now resident at Lyttelton, will be requested to act as umpire for Otagd.
