Parliament has been prorogued. The Queen's Speech says : —"Foreign relations are friendly and cordial. The Treaty of Berlin has been faithfully executed by the signatory Powers, and the calamities of war prevented. The British Government continues to urge the execution of reforms in Turkey upon the Sultan. The misgovernment of Egypt has compelled the change of the Ivliedive. The frontier tribe? and the Ameer of Afghanistan guarantee the safety and peace of India, while we now have a strengthened frontier." jfc trusts that recent successes in Africa will lead to a speedy conclusion of peace. There is no mention of the Greek question. August 16.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, in reply to a question, said that in consequence of the great excitement on the frontiers of Tliessaly and Epirus, the Turkish and Greek Governments had strengthened tlieir forces. The British Government did not consider it necessary to mention Greece in the speech. The subscriptions for the Wellington City Loan amounts to L3G5,000. Tenderers at 104 receive 33 per cent, of the amount they apply for, Three per cent. Consols, 97§. Five per cent. New Zealand 10-40 Loan, 103 i. Best Australian beef tallow, 32s 6d per cwt. ; ditto mutton tallow, 34s Gd per cwt. At the wool auctions during the past week 44 : G00 bales have been catalogued. Wool is in fair demand. (reute r's tkleoka m per press association. } Memjouenb, August 19. The robbers of the Commercial Bank at Laucefield wero captured last night at Sandhurst. They are named Grey and Lowe. The latter recently committed a murderous assault oil his master. Sydney, August 18. Owing to the action of the miners at Lambton colliery refusing to abide by the Vend System, a large body of other
miners seized the Lambton works. A disturbance ensued, and shots were fired. One man was slightly injured. On the police arriving the crowd dispersed to a monster open air meeting.. ■ Thirty-five miners have arrived from Adelaide for the Waratah colliery, where the miners are locked out. August 19. A detachment of Artillery and police, fully armed, have proceeded to Newcastle to quell, if necessary, expected riots among the miners. Bishop Selivyn will deliver an address to-night on the Melanesian mission. Liberal contributions are being made to the funds.
