ELECTION GOSSIP.
Wellington", August 17. A meeting of the members and persons in favor of the Liberal Association was held last night, there being a very large attendance. Sir G. Grey was present and made a long and eloquent speech, advocating the principles of the Liberal party. A resolution was passed congratulating the people of New Zealand on the formation of a Liberal Association. Mr. George Fisher, one of the candidates selected b3 7 the Committee of the Association, and who by the Disqualification Act is ineligible for election without previously resigning his position on Hansard, announced his intention of retiring from the contest. Mr. Thomas Mason, an old settler, has decided to contest,the Hutt seat against Mr. Hemy Jackson. Some dissent has been occasioned owing to the Committee of the Liberal Association having elected their representatives, and it has been decided to hold a full meeting on Tuesday to definitely decide the question. Dunedint, August 16. Mr. J. Nicholas, J. Coneys, J. M'Carfcney, and J. Roberston, all of Portobello, are spoken of as probable candidates for Caversham. Auckland, August 17. Mr. J. S. Macfarlane addressed the Waitemata constituents at Devonport last night. A vote of no confidence was carried by a large majority, and also a vote of thanks for addressing them. Mr. M'Minn addressed his constituents at Te Awamutu. A vote of censure was moved by Mr. D. S. Ring for the Liberal party. An amendment was proposed of a vote of thanks. There were ten for the vote of censure, and twelve for the vote of thanks. Mr. Crooke addressed a meeting subsequently in the Grey iuterest. It is stated that Te Wheoro has determined to resign his appointment, and accept an invitation from Waikato to contest the seat lately held by Hoani Nahe. Mr. Whitaker's address to the electors of Eden is published. Messrs. Newman and Taylor will retire. Mr. To e has decided to go to the poll. Mr. Robert Graham has decided to stand for Onehunga against Mr. O'Rorke. Mr. John Hay contemplates standing for Marsden. August 18. Mr. Whitaker's Waikato constituents intend requesting him to reconsider his determination to stand for Eden, i It is reported in town that Mr. Moat has decided to retire from the Rodney contest, owing to indisposition. Christceurch, August 16. It was rumored to-day that the Liberal Association have another candidate to bring forward for Christchurch, but the name has not so far transpired. Messrs. Richardson and Stevens' committe are working very hard to secure the return of their men. Napier, August 17. A new evening paper called the Star appears in the interests of the Government party. The idea was first mooted on Thursday or Friday, and a contract was made with the Herald proprietors for printing it, and on Saturday it was first announced. Invebcajioill, August 17. Mr. W. A. Lyon, a settler, will stand for Riverton. He is the fifth candidate announced. Westport, August 18. A crowded meeting was held on Saturday night, when it was agreed to form a Liberal Association, to be affiliated to the head Association at Wellington. Messrs. Munro, Fisher, O'Connor, and Muuson addressed the meeting. The members meet early in the week to nominate the candidate for the Buller seat. Who shall stand has not yet been decided. It will probably be Munro, Fisher, or O'Connor. Munson has been mentioned, but it is not likely. Liberal meetings will be held throughout the electorate. Dr. Henry has arrived from Nelson overland, and is visiting electors at Lyell.
