THE MAORIS AND THE CONFISCATED LAND.
[by telegraph,] Wellington, August 16.
On behalf of the Maori prisoners, a committee of chiefs have been nominated, who have taken legal advice as to the line of conduct to be pursued. The committee consists of Wi Tako, Wi Parata, Hoani Nahe, Major Kemp, and four others of less note, and these have decided to lay the following case before the whole of the tribes interested in the confiscated lands throughout New Zealand, and will send it out in the form of a manifesto : resolve to do no acts of violence in the assertion of their claims, but leave everything in abeyance, presumably on the condition that the Government will take no further action regarding the surveys or occupation for the present. 2. Respecting the conficated lands, the committee, through their lawyers, are preparing an act to enable a test case to be brought to the Supreme Court of Appeal, and then if there are any questions which that Court will decline the responsibility of, the final settling of the matter will be sent before Her Majesty the Queen and her Council assembled, where the whole question will be gone into and finally disposed of.
