ELECTION GOSSIP.
Wellington, August 12. A deputation waited upon Mr. Greenfield to-day, asking him to stand for Wellington. He has consented to stand. Christchuiich, August 12. Sir George Grey announces his candidature for Christchurch. Mr. J. Gammock has been requested to stand for Selwyn by a number of influential residents in the district. The Hon. E. Richardson announces his candidature for Christchurch. Auckland, August 12. Mr. Joseph Newman met the Eden constituents at Newmarket to-night. He stated that he would not pledge himself to support Sir George Grey, but would act as an independent member. He received a vote of thanks. August 13. Mr. Swanson, member for Newton, reprints his old electoral address, as he will go in the old path. Mr, Moss, member for Parnell, states that he will give the Ministry his sincere support. Mr. Hobbs, member for Franklyn, requests the electors who approve of the Government administration not to vote for him. Westpokt, Ausmst 12. A meeting for the purpose of forming a Liberal Association is oaiied for Wednesday. New Plymouth, August 12. Colonel Trimble has published his address announcing that he will stand for Grey and Bell. Mr. Fooks has also announced that he will oppose Mr. Kelly in the town. Nai'ieu, August 12. Mv. Sutton announces his intention to stand for re-election. Captain Russell issues his address to-morrow. Mr. Richard D. Mauey, of Wairoa, storekeeper, is going to stand in the Liberal interest, supporting denominational education. He will receive the Catholic vote. Mr. John Buchanan, who was defeated by Mr. Mutton at the last general election by a small majority, will stand as a Liberal in the secular interest, but is not expected to support Sir George Grey personally. It is not likely that Mr. Ormond will be opposed for Clive, though an attempt will probably be made to induce Mr. Sheehan to contest the seat. Invekcargill, August 12.
Captain Eankinson is in the field for Riverton. His address is published. Mr. J. L. M'Donald, merchant, is talked of for the same seat.
