A class meeting last night decided to petition the Government, praying that no further immigration take place at present unless immigrants pay full passage money. At the meeting last night relative to borrowing L 130,000 for additional water works, the motion was carried in favor of it by two votes. A poll will be taken. August 11. decided to stand for Christchurch at tho coming general election. A quantity of quartz obtained from Makara has been analysed, and gives a fair per centage of silver. AUCKLAND. August 11. Mr. Winter, it is stated, has gone to Sydney, to get appliances to raise the steamer Taupo. Last night Detective Jeffrey arrested Mark Von Pragg, on a warrant from the Sydney Bench, charged with stealing L6O, the property of Simmons, a dealer, of Sydney. He was identified by means of a photograph. It appears to be a case of elopement. Pragg was accompanied by Mrs. Simmons and her child, and they have lived together since their arrival. Pragg was an omnibus driver in Sydney. He was brought up at the Police Court to-day, and remanded for eight days, so that lie may be handed over to a member of the Sydney detective force, who is expected to arrive by the mail boat in pursuit of prisoner. A defaulter was taken off the Hero, en route for Sydney, at Russell. Sarah Boden died suddenly at the Thames. The cause of death was heart disease. INVERCARGILL. August 9. Mr. J. R. Cuthbertson, one of the candidates for Wallace, publishes an address to the electors. He announces himself as an out-an-out liberal. Mr. Hirst and Mr. J. P. Joyce will contest the seat along with him.
