(rEIi PRESS ASSOCIATION). WELLINGTON. August G. A committee has been formed of the Maori members of both Houses to defend the Maori prisoners and try the legality of the confiscation of native land. Taiaroa is President, and Wi Parata Secretary. Mr. Buller has been retained to get up the cases, and Mr. Travers as counsel. Circulars soliciting subscriptions are being sent to all the tribes. AUCKLAND. August G. The Hero brought the bulk of the new season's teas, consisting of 4000 packages. ~ Three schooners Iwve arrived from the Islands, causing a glut in the fruit market. A man named John Morgan was found in Fort-street at a late hour covered with blood and in an exhausted state. He was removed to the Hospital.

TIMARU. August 5. A man named Stevens, while under the influence of drink, conducted himself in a most extgaordinary manner- in the western part of the 'town to-day. He ; professed to be the landlord of several : houses and obtained rent, and also assaulted a number of women. Eventually he was arrested. INVERCARGILL. August 5. A numerously attended meeting of persons favorable to the present Government . was held this evening at Johnstons Hotel, Esk-street, to take steps to conserve party interests, and also to select a candidate to represent them in the next ■ Parliament. There was an earnest discussion, and Mr. Fehlwick, iho present member, was mentioned.
