Two cases of drunkenness comprised the whole of the business brought before the Resident Magistrate to-dav. William Lyons was discharged with a caution, and Mary Sullivan was fined ss, with the alternative of •J-f hours' imprisonment. The Good Templars re-union at Kakanui waa vcrv well attended on Tuesday evening, amongst those present being a number of members' of the Order from Oamaru and Maheno. Some discussion took place upon the particular matter for which the nieetipg was held, and arrangements were made by which it is hoped that the Kakanui Lodge will be placed upon a more satisfactory footing. Mr. Wakefield, the Parliamentary correspondent of the Timaru Herald, writes thus of Mr. Wakefield. M.H.R., and Minis-ter-expectant :—" Mr. Wakefield made the longest and strongest speech that he has yet made. It is - great trifil of the patience of the House lor any member to bpoajv for more than an hour and a half, but "he spoke for very nearly threi hours-. He seemed to have such a mass of maitar that he could not get it into the time. He took it very cpojly, though, and was so far justified that the House listened to him with the closest attention to the very end, both sides cheering and laughing at his various points as he went on.''
The annual meeting of the Oamaru Artillery Corps was held on Tuesday evening, when there U'xs a very good attendance. After the transaction of topic formal business, the Treasurer's Statement wan read, disclosing the highly satisfactory fact that the battery had a credit balance of LOO. Corporal flardner was reflected Secretary, Lieut. (Ireentield as Treasurer, and Sergeant-Major Creagh, Corporal iJro -vn, and Gunner Garrow were chosen to act on the Committee. A' otes of thanks were accorded to the ollice-bearer.s of the past year. A sum of money was voted for the purchase of new music for the band, and it was decided to have the uniforms for the band provided at once, in order tnat it may turn out with the battery. Six new membe s were elected, and several caud dates nominated, altvr which the meeting terminated.
