Tin thunders of party strife which loudly pealevf within the wails of the House of I'atfiament at Wellington have scarcely been silenced by his Excellency ere the wave has reached ns. Loud rumbling noises, pre.cursors of an impending outbreak, nil the
air. Parties are sharpening their weapons, and preparing for bitter strife. In fact, Mr. Ritchie Young is a candidate for the representation of High in the Municipal Council. The momentousness of the affair almost arrests our pen. W hat will High Ward do if Mr. Young does not get into the Council? What will it do if he does ? In the one case it will remain a3 it is; in the other no money will be spent npon it. Yet, it is just as well that the ratepayers should get something, and, if they, for the next two years., get nothing but the satisfaction of knowing that Mr. Ritchie Young sits in the Council as their representative, they will doubtks.s be satisfied. He is intended to be the " working man's representative." and he v. ill. as tile"Council will have 1 no funds to r.dminister during his term of r.itice. be able to devote the more time to the wrongs of the working men of his ward, and to'watch narrowly that public money i 3 not misappropriated. Mr. Ottcrwoii is also a candidate; but he has too Lireat a stake in the municipality to be of any use. In the presert state ot the finances • Council Mr. Young is the man for the ri-j-iition. There >s no philosophy in having turn of influence in the Council now, for may influence expenditure on town impioV..iii..nt-!, find that would be disastrous in the present state <jl tin: Council's finances. Mr. Young's supporters nre to be complimented on their condcration for the general gnod of the Municipality in bringinghim forward. It would not be fair to choose such a man as Mr. Otterson, who would probably succeed in getting some improvements effected in High Ward, when it i* desirable that the expenditure of the Counoli'- funds should be very circumscribed.
