The gold shipped from Greymouth from the Ist of January, 1879, to July 12th, 1879, is 40,8440z5. lOdwts., of the value of L 179,477. NAPIER. July 15. Carl Strodman, a Danish chemist, was to-day charged with the manslaughter of Mrs. Caroline Durvig, a Dane of Norsewood, by unskilful treatment during her confinement. The Resident Magistrate, thinking that no jury would convict, discharged him. A man named Hardy got in a furious temper with his wife to-day. They lived in a house which he had built upon a clearing in the bush belonging to the Hon. H. Russell. The wife and daughter ran out of the house, when he seized a gun and fired after them, the shot striking the door as they closed it. He then set fire to the house," which was burnt down. He was brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court, charged with arson, but° as it could not be found that any second person had been injured by the fire, and as the house was not insured, the police withdrew the charge. He was then fined LI for assaulting his wife, and was sent to prison in default of finding sureties to keep the peace for six months. INVERCARGILL. July 15. A preliminary enquiry was held to-day into the stranding of the schooner Jane Anderson, at New River Heads, on the 3rd July. Evidence of a very contradictory nature was given by the pilot and captain, the former swearing that due signals were given, and the latter denying that such was the case. The decision of the Collector of Customs will be made known in due course.
