Mr. Hnnnay, lately Secretary of Railw ays, stationed in Christchurch, and Acting Commissioner during the period of Air, Conyers' indisposition, is, witti his family, about to become a resident of Oamaru, as General Manager of the central section of the Anil-erley-Invercargill railway. The district over which ho lias supervision commences at Temuka and ends at I'alinerston, including all the branches of the main line between those places. A steamer arrived at Port Darwin yesterday evening with cablegrams, and will probably leave oil the return trip to-night. Telegrams must be handed in not later than S p.m. If "Looker On" will comply with the rule laid down by all newspapers, and send his real name, we shall be glad to insert his complaint. The Morning Herald forgot to insert us as its authority when publishing the information respecting the ease .-'olomon v. South British Insurance Co. It is eminently absentminded in such matters.
We observe that Messrs. Ferrier and Rock have, been appointed " Photographers to his Excellency the Governor." The members of the newly-formed Fire Brigade, having received a supply of hose, &e., had a very successful practice yesterday afternoon. Water was obtained at Messrs. Lees and Moore's dam, and the engine was made to throw a jet of water over Messrs. J. T. Evans and Co's. mill.
; The usual monthly meeting of the Hospital Committee was held last evening, when ' there were present —Messrs. Brown (Presi- | dent), Mainland, Headland, Montagu, Townsend, M'lntosh, Lemon, and Church (Secretary). The question of providing a new stove for the Hospital was referred, with power to act, to a Sub-Committee consisting of Messrg. Lemon, Mainland, and M'lntosh. The Visiting Committee reported having visited the Hospital on Saturday, when they found everything i» a satisfactory state. ITie number of pafciant# in' the Hospital pn that day was four, all males, '£hey desired to thank Mrs. Clowes for a gift of illustrated papers, and Mrs. Andrew Gray (Chelmerstreet) for j? present of fresh vegetables. A number of acoun£s 7>*ere passed for payment, and cho meeting terminated, Amongst the exports "by the ship Benares, which has just cleared .out of Port Chalmers for London, we notice that there are 115 bales of rabbit skins. The sale of these should go a long way towards paying the ex> pense of attempted extermination. In its mail nejrs the Melbourne Daily Telegmph says : A correspondent with General Wood's column writes—"Arthur Dobson, poor fellow, was killed on the very top of Zlobanc. He happened to be right behind everybody else, and one of the: Frontier Light Horse rode up to him and said, ' For God's sake, T'obon. come on, the Zulus are almost on top of yon.' He, looking behind, and in the coolest way, said, 'That's nothing ; you go on, I v/ill take care of myself.' He hed a splei rild Jiorse, but never attempted to hurry it on," Mr. John Tyerman, who once used to ornament Lis name by adding Reverend, it is said will shortly be here to lecture on .Spiritualism. "He was forsierly a clergyman of the C'hureh of England," says the Ot.T.'o Daily Times. If so, he is singularly ■ fond ox change, for we recollect that he was, j nearly fifteen years ago, the pastor of the Primitive Methodist Church in Christchurch. He differed from his flock in certain matters which we will not here refer to ; and he was necessitated to sever his connection with his clniif-h and join the Swcdenborgians. ' He has now, it would appear, made yet another change, and sought to quieten his oversensitive conscience by upcoming a prominent Spiritualist. Let us hope that lie has at last found a religion that will be useful to him. Rcljirious gymnastics, we should think, at length become .irksome, and another change, from conscientious motives, to Mor.moni.sin, or some such religion, would no.t cpmpensate in variety for the monotony of incessant change.
