WELLINGTON. July 14 In the Supreme Court, Perotti, an Italian, was convicted of aiding and abetting in the recent stabbing case. Sentence was deferred. Cooper's case, for a breach of the Arms Act, is fixed for Wednesday, before a special jury. In the Police Court. Charles \V. Wood, arrested on a warrant from Christchurch for wife desertion, and from Timaru for fraudulent bankruptcy, was remanded to Christchurch. Mr. J. W. Thompson, member for Clutha, has accepted a seat in the Ministry, and will probably hold the portfolio of Slinister of Lauds. Ho will be sworn to-morrow. Mr. Brycc will be the Government nominee for the Chairmanship of Committees. July 14. A strike of navvies has occurred at Carterton, and several constables have been sent from town to prevent any disturbance. DUNEDIN. July 14. At 8.30 and 8.45 this morning tidal waves were observed in the Molyneux. At Kaifangaia the river rose and fell two feet each time. HOKIIIKA. July 14. The Claud Hamilton leaves here for Melbourne, via Newcastle, to-morrow morning at daybreak. The Bank of New Zealand shipped by her 24000z5. of gold ; the Union Bank shipped 30750z5. This makes a total of 35,0050z5. shipped from this port, the produce of this district since .January Ist this year till date. ASHBURTON. Julv 14. It is rumored that a lawsuit will shortly be commenced between two large landowners in this county touching the flooding of a valuable property by water, til rough diversion during the late heavy rains. Keropa was charged at the R.M. Court this morning with threatening to serve any European who came on a certain piece of" land, the same as Hiirki served M'Lean. He was remanded till tomorrow morning. The Wanganui School Committee unanimously passed the following resolution : '• The Wanganui School Committee, in view of the attempt now being made by Committees in other Districts to obtain an amendment of the Education Act, for the purpose °f permitting Bible reading in schools, desires to place on record its opinion that such amendment would undermine the established principle of secular education ; and it is, therefore, hereby resolved to offer an uncompromising opposition to any such proposal." TIMARU. July 14. The body of the boy, James Shea, who was drowned at the wreck of the Akbar, was found to-day in Caroline Bay. The body of Thomas Price, who died from exposure in the snow at Burke's Pass on Friday, wa3 brought to town to-day. Terrible accounts of the fearful weather in the M'Kenzto Country have reached town. Many persons have undergone fearful sufferings, and narrowly escaped with their lives. Some are more or less frost-bitten. Already large numbers of sheep are reported as lost in the snow, which 13 now hard frozen by frost. INYERCARGILL. July 15. A fire broke out this morning between two and three o'clock in Dunlop's mattress and bedding factory, at the back of a brick establishment in Tay-street. When discovered the fire had such a firm hold upon the wooden building and its inflammable contents as to preclude any hope of saving them, and the efforts of those assembled were directed to preventing the fire extending. Luckily the night was calm, and the Brigade "being promptly on the spot, the fire was confined to one building, although those on either side were seriously scorched, the verandah and fencing of one and the side of the other once being in a blaze. It is understood that the building and i's contents were insured for L 250. The origin of the fire is unknown.
