COMMENCEMENT OF THE LIVINGSTONE RAILWAY.
Shortly before noon to-day a special train proceeded to Windsor with a large party of ladies and gentlemen, anxious, despite the uninviting weather, to be present at the ceremony of turning the first sod of the Windsor-Livingstone railway. As' vre have already announced, this line ''i^^probably'f6rm 'a portion of "a railway into the' interior ' of "the "jjrovincial district, and its commencement has long been I anxiously looked forward to. The RailCommittee originally appointed to en-1
deavor to get a line constructed to connect Naseby with Oamaru, finding it impossible to achieve that end, set about manfully to at least secure an extension of the existing line as far as Livingstone, and so bring that fine country into direct intercourse with, a seaport. The Mayor has been especially energetic in endeavoring to have the line constructed, and has devotg? a considerable amount of time to its promotion. In addition to providing a large amount of information, he succeeded in obtaining from the land-owners free grants of nearly all the land required for the line. For the trouble he has taken he is entitled to the best thanks not only of the townspeople, but of the whole district likely to be affected by the formation of the railway which .has been started to-day. The ceremony of to-day, though confined entirely to residents in the town and district, is a very important one, and the commencement of another extension of the district railways ..will be hailed with general satisfaction. The invitations to attend the ceremony were confined entirely to the members of the Hallway Committee, members of Parliament, and the Resident Magistrate, with such others as Messrs. Reid and Menlove, who generously provided the luncheon that followed the formal part of the business, might invite. The train had not returned when we went, to press, and we are therefore unable to give a report in our present issue.
