John Stein, proprietor of an aGpommor dation house in Wairarapa, is reported drowned in the Matakera River, while on his way to attend the Licensing Court, Detective Brown has found in the possession of the wife of a man named Robertson, who, rit the last sessions here, was sentenced to two years for burglary, a gold watch and other property, stolen in 187S from an hotel in Sydney. June 5. The College Governors have arranged with the Bank of New Zealand for funds to meet all ordinary expenditure during tha current year. Th.e number of pupils show an increase of 28. Professor Kirk's services are to be retained if he assists in the general school work, as well as lectures on natural science. Four Gattling guns are said to be on the way from Home to the order of the Government. At the Court of Appeal judgment was given for the .defendants in the case of Henderson v. the Napier Harbcir Board. Steps will be taken to prosecute at; appeal. Leave was given for plaintiff to appeal in : the case of Proudfoot v. the Otago Harbor Board, the plaintiff to find surety to the extent of L7OOO to await the decision of the Privy Council. AUCKLAND. I June 4. The Governor desires Rewi to remain at Auckland till he can come up to see him, to yvhich Rewi has consented. Rewi will probably go to the Hot Springs at Waiwera.

CHRISTCHURCK. June 4. ■ The Agricultural Association have made distinct classes for Hereford cattle at the forthcoming Show and for Berkshire pigs. Prizes will be offered for new cheese, powdered butter, bone manure, cooking ranges, above the price of LlO and below. ' Objections to the land tax valuation are pouring in from all sides. Six additional applications for space at the Sydney Exhibition have been received. . . TIMARU. June 4. Three members of the Borough Council resigned last night, and it is probable others will do the same. William John Simnionds was committed to the Supreme Court for robbery with violence from a man named George Berry. There arc now 15 criminal and 10 civil cases (all the latter for special jury) for trial at the sittings, which commence next week. GKEYMOUTH. June 4. A number of the men employed by the contractor on the first section of the Grey-mouth-Hokitika railway have struck work for 10s a day, the price offered being 9s per day. HOKITIKA. June 4. Not a single death occurred in this district last month. The Kennedy got off the North Spit last night, and leaves for Nelson direct to-night for repairs. His Honor Judge Weston expressed an opinion during the sitting of the District Court yesterday that deeds of assignment were mere cloaks of iniquity. John Lazar, Right Woshipful District Grand Master of Masonry for West-land, lies in a very precarious state, aud very little hopes are entertained of his recovery. He is turned 70 years of age. Great , sympathy is felt all over the district for him and his family.
