SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

[FROM OUR OWN CORKESPONDEmS.] DUNEDIN. May 19. Michael Clearly was fined 10s, with the option of two months' imprisonment, for assaulting the police. The case against Macdonald, for fraudulent bankruptcy, is proceeding. Mr. A. H. Ross has been elected to the vacancy in the City Council.

CHRISTCHUKCH. May 19. In reply to a letter from the local agent of the Press Agency, pointing out that a mischievous and injurious commercial telegram appeared in the Otago Daily Times from our correspondent, Christchurch, and not in the Herald, Mr. Caro writes to-day regretting that his statement was so general. He says he never intended to convey the impression that the telegram which caused so much mischief had appeared in the Herald only. He thought it did. The local agent here of the Press Agency immediately took measures to prove that the statement as to its appearing in the Herald was not true. William Barnard, butcher, of Kaiapoi, was brought up this morning charged with stealing about 300 sheep, the property of Mr. Chapman, runholder, of Moeraki Downs. The case was remanded for a week, bail being granted, self in L2OO, and two sureties of LIOO each. Oram Shepherd was fined L 5 for keeping the White Hart- Hotel open during prohibited hours. The defence was that the offence was committed in the billiardroom, which is not connected with the hotel.
