Mr' Shrimski said that in connection with the statement just read, there' was one matter to which he wished to refer, and with which he wished, the public to be made acquainted through the Press. At their last meeting the County Council had very generously voted L2O of the ratepayers' money to the North Otago Benevolent Society. While he admired their charity he could not help regretting that the Hospital should have escaped their attention. If the Benevolent Institution was deserving of the L2O voted, the Hospital, he thought, should have received at least LIOO. He regretted
that its superior claims should have been passed over by the County Council. The Hospital had a far higher purpose to serve than the other institution ; it was the means of relieving the wants of the sick and.injured. The Benevolent Institution could be relieved by means of private charity much more easily than could those who were stricken down by sickness. He regretted to observe that subscriptions came In much more freely towards the Benevolent Institution than they did in aid of the Hospital, which, he thought, few would deny was the more deserving object. The Chairman asked if Mr. Shrimski wished to bring the matter under the notice of the County Council by means of a deputation. Mr. Shrimski replied that ho had no such desire, but would be quite satisfied with publicity being given to the subject by the Press. The matter then dropped. Votes of thanks were passed to the
ladies and gentlemen who contributed to the Hospital funds, and the meeting terminated with the usual compliment to the Chairman.
