The Court of Enquiry into the loss of the Hyderabad has returned the officers' certificates, finding that the captain was not to blame. Mr. Chief Surveyor Jackson has been dismissed the public service, and directed to hand over everything to Mr. J. W. Marchant. The Chronicle says that Mr. Jackson is the victim of an iniquitous conspiracy, and threatens a Parliamentary enquiry. The Sunday collections in the various churches will add about LIOO to the Kaitangata Fund. At a meeting of the College Governors to-day, it was stated that applications, which had been received for the different masterships were as follows :—Second mastership, 32 applications; mathematical masterships, 19 ; modern languages, 2G. DUNEMN. March 19. The fact of the Irish celebration on St. Patrick's Day being held under the auspices of the Hibernian Society, which is a Roman Catholic organisation, has caused some dissatisfaction, and it is probable that the annual demonstration will in future be conducted by a Committee and rendered undenominational. Alex. Baird, engineer of the Rotorua, has been appointed Inspector of Machinery to the Otago Harbor Board at a salary of L3OO per annum. Mr. Creswick finishes his season here on Thursday. The railway guard who allowed a tram to collide with some trucks on a siding at Green Island, by leaving the pionts open about a fortnight ago, has been .dismissed. Last evening the public meeting convened under the auspices of the New Zealand Temperance Alliance, was largely attended by clergymen, and presided over by Messrs. Stout and Oliver, M.H.R's., but the attendance of the public was very small. A man named Stevens was ordered by the Bench to-day to pay a weekly contribution for the support of two children in the Industrial School, or suffer one month's imprisonment. It transpired that he had married a widow with, twelve of a family, and the master of the school expressed concern lest the whole crowd should be transferred to the Institution. CHRISTCHURCH. March 18.
Thirtv-seven cases of typhoid fever and six of diphtheria were reported during the past month. Constable Bashford was fined LI for disrespect to Colonel Brett, The outcome has caused some surprise, but the inquiry was kept private, so that full particulars have not been made public. A large number of applications for new hotels were made at the Licensing Court to-day, every one of which was flatly refused.

An important case was heard at the Tarara Assessment Court, Several steam millers appeared against their mills being rated by the Road Board. Mr. Percy Adams, on their behalf, urged that from the nature of the machinery, and indeed of the mills, which are moveable, they partook of the nature of small chattels. He also contended that if they were held to be fixtures they were trade fixtures, consequent • t'.iey should not be rated by the Assess:.lent Court. Judge Guinness disallowed the assessment on the grounds that even if they were fixtures they were trade fixtures. ' _ At an inquest held on "White's fire, at Brightwater, there was no evidence to show the origin. A verdict of " Accidental" was returned. White estimates his loss—Building, LGOO; furniture, LI 500. The building was insured in the National for L4OO and in the Norwich for L -7 00, and the furniture was insured in the Victoria for L2OO, and in the South British for L 250. It is said that some of the agents will dispute the claims on the ground that no notice was given them of other policies. A young salmon, five inches long, was caught in the mill lead, near Brightwater, yesterday. As it is nearly two years since the salmon were turned out there, this shows they are breeding.

March 19. 4. new Lodge of the National Independent Order of Oddfellows has been opened at Newton. . T. Goodfellow, the athlete, intends wiving a performance next week, a great portion of the proceeds of which go to the Kaitangata Relief Fund. Be Binney's offer of a composition of 10s. in the £ in his estate, the Bank of New Zealand has postponed its decision for some days.
