RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY. (Before James Hassell and James Uilall, Esqs., J.P.'s) T. 0. Bennett was brought up, charged with obtaining money and goods on false pretences to the aniont of LI 12s Gd in cash, and LI 7s Gd in goods, from one James Beattie, of Invercargill, with, intent to cheat and defraud him of the same. G. Cartmill, sworn, deposed : I am a constable stationed at Waimate. 1 arrested the prisoner on the 18th, on the warrant produced, issued from the Invercargill Bench. Sergeant Beattie asked for a remand for the 27th to Invercargill. The remand was granted. Robert Clelland was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Coquet-street. The Bench fined the accused 10s., which was paid. 0. H. Dodge was charged by the Inspector of Nuisances with creating a nuisance on his property. Mr. O'Meagher appeared for the defendant, and stated that he was prepared to prove that tho nuisance was abated, and that the premises complained of were not on defendant's property. The Inspector of Nuisances applied for an adjournment till the 21st inst., which was granted. "Neil Docherty was charged, with neglecting to register his ccaiunon lodging-house known as the Melbourne Boarding-house.
The defendant, in answer to the charge, stated that he kept a restaurant, not a boarding-house. Arthur Toms deposed that he had called some time since on defendant, and found his house in a most dirty and disgraceful state, and gave him notice to put the house in repair. This the defendant had done, but he had endeavored to shuffle out of the taking- out of a license by painting oyer the door the word restaurant. The Bench gave the defendant two days to comply with the law.
