William M'Ruddy, for deserting his family, lias been remanded to Christchurch. A railway guard named Collett had his leg broken'and was severely crushed this morning. He got jammed between some trucks loaded with rails, which he was attaching to a passing train at the railway workshops. Sergeant Anderson, of Dunedin, is under orders to proceed to Wellington to take charge of the police force there. An enquiry is being held at the Customs respecting the alleged cruelty to a ship's apprentice, named Taylor, who was lost from the ship Eastcrhill. A seaman named Johnstone, who leaped intc the sea after the boy fell, states that the lad was fagged out when sent aloft; and that immediately after the accident the captain said, " That is all over, steward, let us have our breakfast." AUCKLAND. February 10. The City of Sydney mail steamer coaled at Russell with Bay of Island coal (250 tons). Captain Dearborn expressed his belief that the mail boats would soon be large consumers. The defeat of the Auckland-built yacht Waitangi by the Magic at the Sydney regatta has touched Auckland pride. It is mooted to send a crew from here by subscription fund to sail her in March against Magic. Father Henneberry gave an address last night in the new Catholic High School to 2000 persons. He stated that L2OOO had been subscribed, and L7OO had been paid, which he had himself guaranteed the builder. He told the builder again to go on, securing him LSOO more, as he knew they would not let him stick during lii.s mission in the Auckland district. Six hundred took the pledge. The body of Captain Evans, of the ketch Pabnerston, who was drowned at the time of the shipping casualties on the Ist September last, was found to-day buried in the shingle in Caroline Bay. It was hardly recognisable. At the Waimate Police Court, yesterday, Sarah Steel and Robert Lee, were committed for trial for forging and uttering cheques in the name of the female prisoner's husband. Other similar charges are hanging over the same prisoners for ..(Fences committed at Christchurch. IXVKRCARGILL. February 10. Arrangements are on foot for a Volunteer Demonstration of all the force in the Middle Island, as far as the north railway .system extends, to be held on Easter Monday. A considerable sum of money is already in hand for expenses. Mr. Valley, the evangelist, comes here next week. Mr. Conyers is convalescent, and will be allowed* to return to Christchurch on Saturday next.
