The First Lord of the Admiralty and the Secretary of State for War have started for Cvprus. Constantinople, October 21. The Sultan has informed the British Ambassador that Turkey will never conclude an alliance with Russia. October 22. A reply has been received by the Sultan from the Ameer of Afghanistan, couched in friendly terms, consequently the present aspect of affairs is unchanged. The Siam, with the Suez mails, left Galle on the 17th. October 23. Large bodies of Russian troops are advancing southwards towards Adrianople and San Stefano. DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (reuter's telegrams, per press agency.) Adelaide, October 22. A resolution has been proposed in both Houses to the effect that it is desirable that the Government should forthwith contract for a monthly mail service between l-riuu'i and South Australia. Time not exceeding 3(5 days, and cost not to exceed L 40.000 m year. Sydney, October 23.
The Assembly decided to go into Committee next Wednesday to consider the resolution approving of the agreement respecting the duplication of the cable. Newcastle coalmasters have decided that the selling price of coal next year shall remain as now.
New Guinea news is discouraging. Trouble is anticipated between the whites and natives. 150 warriors have gone to the interior.
No news received from the Goldie River prospectors. Fears are entertained for their safety. ______
