[fhoii our own correspondent.] Our .Livingston correspondent writes:— In reply to a request of the Miners' Association, the Government have consented to grant the services of Professor Ulrich to report professionally upon the goldfield here on the close of the current University session. His report cannot I fail to be an interesting one, since the | district contains abundant evidence of glacial and volcanic action in the numerous up-heavals, basalt cliffs, and gorges —so characteristic of the place. Some fine specimens of fossil shells have been recently discovered in the township in excellent preservation at a depth of some 80ft. below the surface, among which may be mentioned the fresh water '•'Melania" and the " Venerieardia Imbricata," and when it la considered that the township is upwards of I.oooft. above sea level a fine field for speculation is opened up. The want of a Deputy Registrar is much felt here, and the state of things will not be much improved by the decision of the Government to. appoint one at Duntroon, It will be anything but central for the district, placed as it is directly at one extreme of a very large area, communication with which is not easy. The Warden's Court advertised about three weeks since, and postponed, is to be held on the Ist prox. The winter seems now to have broken up. It was one which fully justified the remarks contained in a former letter, viz., " It bids fair to be one of the severest on record,"
