WAJMATE. September 10. A number of inhabitants of the town, considering themselves persecuted by Sergeant Ruutledge, carried that functionary's effigy through the streets last night in a e.otiin, to the strains of the Dead March o'ayed by the local band. After a great demonstration, the representative of the object of their dislike was cremated, and portions of remains of what was intended as the worthy policeman's likeness are strewn about the streets. It is rumored that the sergeant intends to take proceedings in order to obtain satisfaction. Later. The demonstration last night was got up by two persons, one of whom considers himself a respectable publican. The disgraceful drunken exhibition was viewed by respectable townspeople as a blot on Waimate, and as the result of a strict and laudable execution of duty on the part of Sergeant Routledge.
