A correspondent signing himself " Opposite the Roysd," has sent us 8 letter in which he intimates that he keeps a hairdresser's shop, and that he is the person alluded to in our paragraph on the railway station, which appeared a few days ago. We thought so. He says that he was exceedingly proud on reading our remarks, and, thinking that we wanted matter to fill up a corner of our paper, he has sent us a letter of about threequarters of a column. We regret that the crowded state of our sheet precludes the possibility of our finding room for it until early next week. Meanwhile the public will please exercise a little patience.
The service for children which waa postponed last Sunday evening in consequence of the inclemency of the weather, will take place to-morrow evening, at seven o'clock, in the new Tees-9treet Hall. The Rev. Mr. Grime will officiate to-mor-row morning, at eleven o'clock, at Kakanui ; and at half-past three o'clock in the afternoon at Maheno. On the following Sunday he will hold services at Otepopo at eleven o'clock, and at Hampden at half-past six o'clock; and on Sunday, the 29th intant, at Duntroon at 11 a.m., and Otekaike at 6 p.m.
A meeting of the Oamaru Christy's was held last evening at Mr. Earle's diningrooms when a balance-sheet in connection with the late entertainment was submitted and adopted. This showed that the receipts were L4O Bs., and that after defraying expenses and paying off all outstanding liabilities against the company, a respectable balance remained.
In another column will be seen a notification to the effect that jurors summoned to serve on civil cases will not be required to attend till the 7th October next, and that those summoned for criminal cases will be expected to appear as stated in their summonses.
At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, Alex. Campbell was fined 2s. 6d. for driving a cow through Thames and Tees streets within prohibited hours.
There was not a full muster of Volunteers at the monthly inspection parade last evening, the attendance being smaller than usual. In the absence of Major Steward, Captain Morton, of the Artillery, acted as inspecting officer. At the conclusion of the parade, a meeting of members of the Artillery and No. 1 Company was held for the purpose of considering the proposal to form a Rifle Association for the whole Colony. The circular received by the commanding officer from Mr. Stevens, the interim Secretary at Wellington, having been read by Captain Sumpter, some discussion took place upon the subject. It was finally decided to appoint delegates from both corps to confer with those appointed by the North Otago Rifle Association as to what steps should be taken.
The quarterly meeting of the Presbytery of Oamaru was held, at Otepopo on Wednesday last, when the following members were present :—Clergy : Revs. Cameron, Christie, Clark, Todd, Seteven, Smith, Ryley, and Baird; Elder: Mr. Findlay. The Rev. J. Copeland, missionary, who was preseent, was associated. The Rev. A. B. Todd was chosen moderator for the ensuing six months. A report was read from Mr. Gilbert with reference to his work in the Upper Waitaki district, and it was agreed to express tho gratification of the Presbytery at vluii h.-m been done. It was further resolved th.it minister should visit the district every six months, and it was recommended that the subscriptions raised in the district should be collected every six months instead of yearly as at present. It was decided to publish this resolution and the financial report fos circulation in the district. Mr. Steven war appointed to visit the stations in October or November next. Mr. Clark gave notice of an overture to the Synod regarding the necessity of taking steps to obtain a supply of ministers, and ministers were requested to report at next meeting with reference to the spiritual necessities of their districts. Mr. Steven gave notice of overtures regarding the publication of supplements, value of glebes, <&c, in the annual reports of the Synod, and in favor of taking steps to have the Evangelist and Missionary Record amalgamated. The Presbytery then adjourned until the 11th December, when it will meet at Oamaru.
A public meeting was held at Duntroon on the evening of the 13th, in Mr. A. A. Smith's Hotel, anent Sohool matters. A letter from the Secretary of the Education Board of Otago was read relative to the boundaries of the proposed School District, and these having been denned the settlers trust that matters will be pushed a-head with every despatch, and that ere long the children in this district will enjoy the privileges which have been granted to places of minor importance.
