COUNTY COUNCIL CONFERENCE.

Wellington, August 10.

The County Council's Conference to-day resolved that valuers under the Counties and Public Works Acts be appointed by committees ; also, that Counties shall have power to frame bye-laws for the eradication of various briars, burrs, rabbits, &c. That the Government be requested to alter the basis of distributing subsidies, to Count} 7 Councils, and local bodies, a»d to classify districts, so that outlying districts may receive more consideration. That county auditors be appointed by ratepayers in addition to final audit, by Government auditors. The Conference adjourned till this evening, when reports on I;oan3 ; Counties Acta, 'ana Reserves, will be considered; The County Conference to-night adopted the report that Reserves should be' vested in County Councils for ferries, canals, wharves on rivers or lakes, landing places for timber or other material, stone quarries, pound, pi-, .ling reserves, water races;, certain Vi iioe reserves in excess of police requirements, which would be useful for carrying stock when travelling, gravel pits with power to delegare tire management of the saine to road digtrigts, commonages or goldfielqs and mining reserves subject to the right of mining thereon. That the following Reserves should be vested in local Boards other than the Counties or Road Boards, viz. :—Recreation Reserves, Racecourse, Botantical Qardans, Cemeteries, A'oatoirSj Industrial Schools, Charitable Institutions, River Protection, and Reserves for drainage or Municipal purposes, That the Government should retain Reserves for railways, tramways, telegraph lines, township and lighthouses. The Conference was still sitting at 9,30 p.m.
