THE MINSTRELS.
The Masonic Hail was crowded, in some parts; to excess last night, the occasion being'the first appearance of the Cheevers, Kennedy, and Bent Minstrels. We confidently assert that, everything considered, this company is;superior to anything of the skind that has yet visited Oamaru. The vocalistsaregood, and they are backed up by an orchestra that lends a great charm to all their performances. The comicalties are unsurpassably funny, whilst there is real merit in the majority of the jokes. Mr. Bent, as chief humorist, is enough of himself to put any company through. But there are others that shine in their particular lines. Messrs. Cheevers and Kennedy, in their Dutch, Irish, and negro sketches, are irresitibiy funny, and play their parts true to life. Mr. Thompson's violin solos were greatly enjoyed, the subjects being "Auld Robin Gray" and " The harp that once." To diversify the programme some very amusing farces were gone through. This evening there will be an entire change of programme, and Mr. Martin Simonsen will, by special request, play one of his exceedingly brilliant and original violin solos.
