The great Constitutional debate was resinned in the House of Commons on May 20, and, after tlio debate a discussion took place which showed a majority for the Government of 121. Midgate was the only Conservative who voted for the resolution, though several abstained from voting altogether. There were nineteen Liberals for the Government. Of eight Irish Home Rulers who so voted, may be ranked several Liberals, who absented themselves. The Blue Book has been issued containing the oiiicial correspondence respecting the insurrections at Thessaly and Epirus. The despatches, 203 in number, show that the insurgents were induced to withdraw on assurance of the British Government that the cause of Greece should not thereby suffer. A compromise has been arranged with regard to the obstinately resisted Irish Sunday Closing Bill, on the condition that its operation is limited to four years. It will now be allowed to pass. A general impression prevails here that if the Congress should prove successful, the Government will appeal to the country, taking credit for their foreign policy, and obtain another lease of power. The heat in Calcutta has been unprecedented, and many deaths have occurred among Europeans from apoplexy, 4- serious outbreak has occurred at Burressal gaol. Eighteen long-term convicts excaped. * Three were shot dead by the guard, and three mortally wounded. The latest famine report from Mysore states that there is no cause for fresli anxiety, heavy rains having fallen. The monsoon season has set in down the coast, but it has not yet fairly burst.
