WAITAKI ROAD BOARD.
The animal meeting of the Waitaki Road Board was held at 11 a.m. to-day at the Road Board offices. PresentMessrs, Connell (Chairman), D. Borrie, Aitcheson, Schluter, Procter, Johston, Nicholls, and Easton. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. Amongst the inward correspondence was a letter from Messrs. Hi slop and Oreagh referring to the late election, and stating that the election of Messrs. Borrie and Nicholls was valid. Tiie Chairman said that if there were any doubts as to the correctness of the opinion just read, the validity of the last election could be tested in the Resident Magistrate's Court, and it was competent for Mr, MmilJie to take action if lie thought it desirable. Hessrs. Hislop and Creagh were solicitors to the Board, and the Board had taken the advice of that firm in this matter as they had done in similar matters. If any member thought fit, he could pass some resolution with regard to it. Mi-. Aitcheson here handed in the papers connected with the last election at the barn, and, on the motion of Mr. Johnston, seconded by Mr. Procter, they were received.
£e the bridge at Boundary Creek, a petition to the Waste Lands Board from Mr. J. K. Craig, remitted to the Waitaki Road Board by the Crown Lands Commissioner, was read, in which Mr. Craig states that.the watering place for cattle on his section would be rendered useless by the action of the B-'ard \n ereoting a bridge over the creek at the water reserve. Mr Johnston moved, and Mr Procter seconded, that Messrs, Easton and Schluter, and the Engineer, be appointed a Committee, with power to act; further, that they be empowered to arrange with Mr. M'Master re fencing of road to this bridge. ..
A letter was read from the Kakanui Road Board, asking that the Board appoint a committee of three members to attend a Conference of the several Road Boards within the County, with a view to secure a fair portion of the funds now in the hands of the County Council. On the motion of Mr. Procter, seconded by Mr. Borrie, it was resolved that the letter be received, and that the Clerk reply, stating that the Board cannot see its way to take joint action in the matter. A circular was read from the Akaroa 'and Wainui Road Boards, in which they asked that the Board would co-operate in supporting any measure that might be introduced into Parliament having for its object the endowment of the Road Boards. Mr. Borrie moved, and Mr. Johnston seconded, that the members for the district be requested to support such measure if introduced. A report was read from the Committee appointed at last meeting to confer with Messrs. Gilchrist and Cameron re exchange of road lines in Block I, Papakaio. On tho motion of Mr. Aitcheson, seconded by Mr. Smillie, the report was adopted ; and it was further resolved that, on Messrs. Gilchrist and Cameron having conveyance of road line to the Board completed, their account for extra land taken and fencing would be paid. A report from the Engineer was read with reference to deviation of road-line in block IV., Awamoko. On the motion of Mr. Johnston, it was resolved that the Clerk write to the several proprietors of land adjoining the road-line, enquiring if they would consent to the deviation ; and also to the Waiareka Road Board, asking if they would contribute half of the cost. Tenders were opened for contracts Nos. 59 and 60. Those for contract 59 being considerably in excess of the Engineer's estimate, it was resolved that fresh tenders be called for, to be in by next meeting. The lowest tender for contract 60 not being accompanied by a marked cheque, as required by the general conditions, Mr. Aitcheson moved, aud Mr. Borrie seconded, that fresh tenders be called for, and that the members of the subdivision bo authorised to accept tho most suitable. Accounts amounting to L7O (h Cd were passed for payment. Ou the motion of Mr. Borrie, the Engineer was instructed to inspect the road between block VI., Papakaio, and block 1., Awamoko ; and also cross-road in block I. Oa the motion of Mr. Aitcheson, the Engineer was : also instructed to inspect tho coal pit road in Horse Gully, aM report. aW On tho motion of Mr. Borrie, seconded by Mr. Johnson, it was resolved that the Waitaki County Council be asked to take over tho roads leading from the County roads to the following railway stations, namely, "Oxbridge and the Awamoko Junction. On the motion of Mr. Borrie, seconded by Mr. Johnston, it was resolved that a Committee be appointed to bring up a code of bye-laws for conducting the meetings. The following notices of motion were tabled for next meeting :—lst. By Mr. Aitcheson, that the following be pro-1 claimed Main District, roads, viz., the road from Aitcheson's Crossing to Wai- ) taki River, the road forming boundary between Waitaki and Waiareka Districts, and road-line in Blocks 11. and V., Awa-1 moko. I Mr. Borrie moved that the sum of L2OOO be taken from the district fund and divided among the subdivisions in an equitable manner, and that the whole of the district have an equal claim to the balance ; also, that a Committee be appointed to bring up a report as to the mode of such division—said Committee to consist of the Chairman and Messrs. Eastan, Procter, Evans, Johnston, Borton and the mover ; three to form a, quorum, and the Chairman to be convener. A vote of thanks having heen passed to the Chairman, the meeting adjourned.
