WATERLOO CUP MEETING. Patron, His Excellency the Governor ; President, Hon. M. Holmes ; VicePresidents, Messv3. Neil Fleming and A. M'Mastcr, ; Field" Stewards. Messrs. N. Fleming, G. M'Lnan, E. Menlove, T. Y. Duncan, G. S. Liutott, T. Brydone, A. Hedley, J. Spence, A. C. Paterson, 11. M'Auly, J. Maclennan, H. Honour ; Slip Steward, Mr. T. Y, JJunpan ■ Flag Steward, Ml\ A, Thomson ; Judge, Mr. 0. E. LJoyd j Slipper, Mr. J. Marshall ; hon. Secretary, Mr. W, H- Pyonayne.

TJio third and principal meeting of the above club commenced this morning under the most favorable auspices, on the Awainoa estate. The weather was glorious, the day being as fine as any that could be looked for in spring. A clear blue sky, and a warm genird sun, made everything as pleasant as could be wished for by the most fastidious of sportsmen. The ground was in excellent condition. but at the commencement of the proceedings hares were the reverse of plentiful, and it was considerably after ten o'clock before the first pair of dogs were slipped. There was a large attendance of spectators, horsemen mustering in strong force, whilst a number of vehicles were also present, the open level nature of the ground favoring this class of locomotion. A novel feature, at any rate so far as the North Otago Coursing Club's meetings are concerned, was presented by the attendance in large numbers of the bookmaking fraternity ; but they did not appear to do much business, few of those present caring to back any of the dogs. Mechanic and Speculation were the first pair in the slips, but it was nearly an hour before a hare was obtained. When "the pair were slipped, a capital course took place. At first, Speculation had somewhat the. best of the hunt; but Mechanic shortly afterwards got in and had things nearly all his own way, though Speculation managed to keep in close attendance throughout, and show in front once. The litres, made, for the hill and rocks, and for a time succeeded In eluding the dogs, but Mechanic sighted the hare again, and had a short run by himself, the hare, however, getting away in the fence. The. course was won '

by Mechanic pretty comfortably. A splendid course took place between Uncle Tom and Fly, both dogs working remarkably well, wrenches being made in rapid succession. Fly had the best of the run, doing most of the real work, and scoring the first kill of the day. Uncle Tom ran somewhat cunningly. A 4 short sharp eourse then took place between Spring and Everton Lass, the former having'the chase all his own way, and killing his hare without Everton Lass once getting in. Then came whnt was looked forward to with -groat interest—a course 'between' Ladybird and Gill Gill, one of the Christchurch contingent. After the entries were out last night, Gill Gill was installed first favorite at very short odds, and large prices wore given for her in sweeps. Not only did her backers entertain strong opinions as to her chances, but the knowing ones declared that there was nothing else in the match. To these, the result must have proved a terrible sell. Ladybird, who was quickest from the slips, led up for nearly the whole of the course, scoring several turns and wrenches before Gill Grill got on level terms with her. At the finish, Gill Gill scored a few points, but not sufficient to avert a defeat, Ladybird winning pretty comfortably. Tnsman and Scaldiugs had a capital course, which was closely contested throughout, but Scaldings won at the finish. John and Ophelia ran a long course, the latter running well, and winning very comfortably. A grand course took place between Belle and Magic, both of whom showed a great deal of foot. Magic proved herself the best worker, and won bravely. At this point (12 o'clock) the weather became extremely cold, and a fall of hail took place, making things exceedingly unpleasant for everyone. Miss Paterson and Leo, another Christchurch dog, were the next pair to enter the slips, and an exciting course took place, but Leo was too good for his opponent, and won easily. A short adjournment then took place, during which a very substantial luncheon, liberally provided by the Hon. M. Holmes was done ample justice to by most of those on the ground. The day's sport was resumed by Cnm-bi-rlaud and Crackshot, the winner of the Puppy Stakes in Christchurch, being placed in the slips. After beating about for a hare for some little time, a splendid contest: took place. Both dogs ran exceedingly well, though Crackshot had decidedly the best of the run, and won a close and exciting contest, after a good struggle. Smoker and St. Bees w.-re the next pair. A short but. not very satisfactory course took place, St. lii-es winning after a short run. Skip and Towley ran a no course, a second hare getting up and tile dogs becoming separated. Busybody and Frolic followed suit, their hare getting away through n fence. Hamlet then ran a bye in company with Sunbeam. Skip and Towley were then placed in the slips to run oil' their no course. A fine strong hare was started, and a fast and closelycontested course was run, Skip being eventually declared the winner. In the run oil' between Busybody and Frolic, the latter proved a good winner.
