MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present his Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Mainland, Liddle, Hamilton, Headland, Booth, Gibbs, and Procter. A Gazette was laid upon the table by the Mayor, containing notices of tlr " -

scrvation, for the purpose of granting fVsame to the Municipality of 177 Li ;il>- ;< iu block XI., Maerewhenua, and of three pieces of town ]•_•: d. .111 rl stated that thero were two or three other pieces which had been promised to be transferred ; as, for itislv.net., that for the new street line in lieu of thiit taken up by the railway in Isi.-.-street, and. suggested that the whole matter should be referred to the Reserves Committee for report. AtuJiti.--.. was drawn by Councillor f" a plan showing certain land ..liicii h.-iu bee', apparently taken for railway purposes in the Garden Reserve, as well.: -. that taken on Tsis^street, Ti'.i Mayor said he was not aware of any Gazette notice having appeared with regard to part of tiie land in question.

It was then resolved that the Gazette notice reserving lands for the endowment of the town (13th June) be referred to the Reserves Committee with a view to re- ■ •mmonding as to any further action I'ccessary or advisable with regard to certain pieces of land not therein included, and that the plan showing land taken for railway purposes in Garden Reserve, and abutting on Ijjis-street, be also referred to the Reserves Committee for report. The Mayor having pointed out that the resolution passed at last meeting with referenc" to aibcaiing the revenue from ■he 2000 acres Municipal endowment passed (owing to a delay in Wellington) before the gazetting of the endowment, it was decided to re.-pags the resolution, and it was accordingly again passed.

Two letters were read from C, A. I'ost, Town Clerk, Palmerston, asking whether an arrangement could be made for the Hospital and Benevolent Institution to receive patients and inmates from Palmerston on the warrant of the Mayor of that Borough, and if so, on what terms.

It was ordered that the letters be referred to the Hospital Committee arid North Otago Benevolent Society, and that Mr. Post be written to informing him that they have been so referred.

A letter fron Mr. F. T. Somervillo (covering plans and specifications*), and asking permission to carry out certain proposed additions and alterations to the Star and Garter Hotel, was referred to the Public Woiks Committee and Engineer for report at next Thursday's meeting.

A letter from Mr. F. Dunlop, asking for the permanent level of Stour-street, at its junction 'vith Lime-street, was similarly dealt with. A letter from Mr. H. R. Gully, Town Clerk, Nelson, asking what action the Council intend taking re the Municipal League, proposad by the Thames Borough Council, was ordered to be replied to, stating that tlu Council has declined to take any actiou in the matter at present. The Gasworks Committee reported, recommending certain alterations at the gasworks cottage ind premises. The report was adopted. On the motion of Councillor Liddle, seconded by Councillor Booth, the question of surface drainage in Aln and Torridge streets, was referred to the Public Works Committee and Engineer for report. The Mayor reported as to the action taken by the Finance Committee, with reference to paying off the LSOOO loan, falling due in September, and it was resolved that the action of the Committee be approved.

The Mayor laid upon the table draft Bills for the following purposes, viz. :

1. To transfer to, and vest in, the Corporation the sections in Block XXXL, heretofore reserved for a sheep reserve or slaughterhouse reserve. 2. To remove doubts as to the validity of certain covenants for renewal in Corporation leases. 3. To empower the Otago Education \\ Board to transfer certain pieces of land required for waterworks pur- * poses, or for the Gape road. 4c. To amend the Oaiharu Waterworks Act; 1875. 'The Bills were gone through seriatim, and in one or two minor particulars amended and adopted; and it was resolved that the said Bills, together with plans and all necessary particulars, be forwarded to the members for the district in the General Assembly, with the request that they will be good enough to use their best endeavours to secure the satno being passed into law {it the ensuing session of the General Assembly. The Council then adjourned.
